Valtrex (valacyclovir) can be prescribed for the treatment of genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chickenpox, as well as a number of other conditions as prescribed by your doctor. Make sure you start taking Valtrex as soon as you notice the first signs of the virus, usually tingling and burning under the skin. Herpes infections can still be contagious if you are taking Valtrex, make sure you use reliable methods to protect your sexual partner from getting the infection. Valtrex is not expected to do any harm to an unborn baby but still needs to be taken with caution by pregnant and breastfeeding women. This drug can pass into breast milk and may harm an unborn baby, which is why breastfeeding women must not start the treatment before discussing all the risks and benefits with their health care provider. You will need to inform your health care provider of any serious side effects such as problems with speech or vision, mood changes, weight gain, seizure, aggression, hallucinations, nausea and vomiting, drowsiness, loss of appetite, or confusion, as they may indicate your treatment is not going quite as planned. In most cases however you will get just a few mild side effects.
